Job Description

The Skalata Ventures Associate Program is a two-year program that offers the in-depth investment and operational experience required for you to kickstart your entrepreneurial career.

You will learn from experienced investors and operators on how to navigate the venture capital world, make early-stage investments, as well as gain hands on experience about how world-class startups are supported at the seed-stage to rapidly scale into significant and sustainable companies.

At the conclusion of the two-year term, the skills, experience, reputation, and networks that you have developed will allow us to work with you to identify the future role of your choice and place you there. This could be in one of our portfolio companies, in another venture capital firm, a more senior role in Skalata Ventures or ideally you will start your own company and we will provide you with funding.

Job Overview

We’re looking for three exceptional Associates to join our team.

We will provide the training required for you to become a major contributor in all aspects of the investment and venture development process, including sourcing and evaluating high quality investment opportunities, and working with our coaches to provide hands-on support to our portfolio of transformative, high-growth companies.

Reporting to the COO, you will proactively identify and nurture the best startups in Australia and build great relationships with our ecosystem partners. You will play an essential role in evaluating promising startups during our investment process (e.g. reviewing pitches/investment submissions, participating in interviews, contributing to our due diligence process).

Everyone on our venture team brings a different perspective to the table (e.g. high growth founder/operator/investor experience and/or a specific skill-set that they’ve developed). You will work closely with this team to provide portfolio company support via a structured venture development process.

You will gain deep experience into what is required to identify, assess, and support a high-growth company, while gaining insight into a network of leading entrepreneurial minds across Australia.

No startup or venture capital experience is necessary (we’ll teach you everything that you need to know). We also encourage applicants from a diverse range of backgrounds to apply. Even if you aren’t sure if you fit all of the criteria mentioned below, our team has a broad range of skills and experiences and viewpoints, and we value these differences on our team.

About Us

Skalata Ventures’ vision is to see Australia transform to a knowledge economy. We advance remarkable founders by bringing together business leaders, universities, corporations, and investors to help create the companies of the future.

To date, we’ve invested in 40+ companies that are rapidly growing, raising capital from local and international investors and transforming industries. We also gain access to the best deal flow across the country through our community and university partners.

Our board is Chaired by Paul Little AO and includes those that have created and/ or advised some of Australia’s largest success stories (Toll, Intrepid Travel, Lochard, Whispir). Our team has deep experience as founders (including exits to ASX-listed companies, Google, and others) and as investors/ supporters of top startups (Nitro, Brosa, Nura, Carbar, Explorate, Preezie and more).

What You’ll Do

  • Identify high-quality investment opportunities, nurture, and connect with promising founders.
  • Develop and maintain great relationships with our ecosystem partners (e.g. universities, community leaders, programs).
  • Actively drive our investment process (e.g. review investment submissions/pitch decks, participate in selection interviews, and complete due diligence activities).
  • Work closely with (and learn from) our coaches to provide portfolio company support via a structured venture development process (e.g. goal-setting/strategy, go-to-market/customer acquisition plans, fundraising strategy etc.)
  • Help founders implement the processes to get the most out of the Skalata experience (e.g. month one company reviews, advisory board meetings, company templates)
  • Assist with monitoring and reporting on portfolio company performance, goals and success metrics.

Requirements

  • You have at least 2 years of professional working experience.
  • You are highly interested in venture capital, early-stage company development and Australia’s venture ecosystem (no startup / venture capital experience is necessary – we will teach you what you need to know).
  • You are empathetic and helpful, with a high level of emotional intelligence when interacting with others.
  • You are an eloquent communicator - you communicate effectively, ask thoughtful questions, and learn quickly from others around you.
  • You have a particular industry insight and/or skill set that you’ve developed either through hands-on experience or exposure.
  • You are a self-starter and have a high level of curiosity to learn from us, as well as our terrific portfolio companies.
  • You are great at problem-solving, self-organisation, and task prioritisation. You can work autonomously but you’re also a great team player.
  • You have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • You have strong public speaking and presentation skills.

Benefits

This is a full-time role with a fixed term of 2 years. The remuneration for this role is $80k p.a. (including superannuation). Note: this role has been designed as a 21st century MBA for those seeking to work in venture capital / entrepreneurship.
