Founded in 2017, Toyota Ventures is a San Francisco Bay Area-based venture capital firm with $500M+ AUM that invests in early-stage startups around the world in frontier and climate technologies. We are on a mission to discover what’s next for Toyota by helping startups bring groundbreaking technologies and business models to market quickly. Our firm is growing, and we’re looking for an experienced Controller to join us on this journey! As the Controller, you will play a critical role in overseeing financial operations for the firm, ensuring accurate reporting and compliance with accounting standards. This position works closely with senior management at Toyota Ventures, and acts as a bridge between the firm and the finance team at our parent company, as well as other groups within and external to Toyota, including legal, tax advisors, and auditors.

Responsibilities
- Prepare and oversee the preparation of accurate and timely financial statements, including quarterly fund reporting and consolidation, annual tax return preparation, and other ad hoc compliance-related filing requirements.
- Develop and maintain comprehensive financial reporting systems.
- Work with our parent company’s Accounts Payable department to manage fund expenses and management expenses.
- Manage all aspects of month-end and quarterly closes.
- Prepare LP capital calls and distributions.
- Oversee cash management and treasury functions, including preparation of wire transfers to portfolio companies.
- Lead annual budgeting process, collaborating with senior management to develop detailed financial projections.
- Maintain an accurate and transparent valuation methodology for portfolio companies, and monitor the fair value measurement process to ensure compliance with industry standards.
- Manage the communication and reporting process with our parent company with regards to financial performance, capital calls, and distributions.
- Document, implement, and maintain appropriate accounting policies, processes and internal controls to safeguard company assets, mitigate risks, and ensure compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) requirements.
- Provide insightful financial analysis and reporting to senior management, including ad hoc reporting as required.
- Coordinate with external auditors for annual audits and ensure compliance with relevant accounting standards and regulations.
- Stay up to date with accounting standards and regulatory requirements, implementing necessary changes.
- Collaborate with key-cross-functional partners including our deals team, legal, finance, and others on a variety of projects.
- Assist in financial reporting during the month-end and quarterly close process.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
- 10+ years of progressive experience in finance and accounting roles.
- CPA or CFA certification is highly preferred, with understanding of U.S. GAAP and fair value accounting.
- Experience at Big 4 public accounting firm or publicly traded company preferred, along with experience in venture capital, private equity, or asset management.
- In-depth knowledge of accounting principles, tax regulations, and regulatory compliance related to investment funds.
- Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Highly detail-oriented and able to manage multiple tasks and deadlines effectively.
- Proficiency in G-Suite and Excel; SQL experience a plus.
- Experience with accounting software/financial systems, including Workday and Xero.
- Commitment to maintaining the highest ethical standards in financial reporting.
- Collaborative mindset with ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
- Experience managing and mentoring finance professionals.
The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $145,000 and $195,000/year for California-based roles; however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Note that TRI offers a generous benefits package (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave) and an annual cash bonus structure.
