Why This Role Exists
We are expanding our footprint West and looking for a Technical Director who can bridge the lab and the market. Innovations emerging from leading universities, health networks, and energy-transition labs need an investor who “speaks science” yet thinks like a venture capitalist. You will be our in-house technical authority - sourcing frontier deals, pressure-testing them for commercial readiness, and mobilising a top-tier network of founders, researchers, and industry operators.
Your Mandate for the First 12–18 Months
Partnerships
- Become an integral part of the local ecosystem by engaging in communities like Platform Calgary, CDL-Rockies, Amii, university accelerators, and university research centres.
Technical Diligence
- Deliver a concise technical due diligence brief for every climate, healthcare, and hard science deal we move into due diligence to help us better evaluate complex technogies and novel approaches.
- Provide clear go / no-go recommendations grounded in IP strength, regulatory pathway, scalability, and ESG considerations.
Advisor & Expert Network
- Recruit and manage a deep bench of domain experts across our areas of focus
- Leverage and coordinate this group of ex-founders, leading doctors, industrial CTOs, and strategic partners - who can join diligence calls, refer deals, and mentor founders.
Deal Generation
- Maintain touchpoints with all leading Alberta startups, connecting them to the deal team when it fits our fund thesis
- Capture high-quality deal referrals through the advisor and partner network.
What You’ll Do
- Cultivate Research Pipelines by embedding with tech-transfer offices, accelerator programs, hospital innovation hubs, and industrial R&D groups.
- Lead Technical Assessments covering IP, technology-readiness level, regulatory landscape, unit economics at scale, and safety/ESG risks; translate findings for non-technical partners and LPs.
- Build an Expert Guild of founders, researchers, and operators to provide scouting intel, diligence support, and post-investment coaching.
- Champion Thought Leadership through whitepapers, webinars, and conference talks that position Amplify as the go-to impact investor for impact and science-based ventures.
- Support Portfolio Companies on tech road-maps, clinical validation, pilot programs, and strategic partnerships; take board or observer seats when needed.
About You
- Deep technical credibility with experience in R&D, product, or engineering leadership in climate-tech, healthcare, or deep tech
- Venture savvy gained through past venture investing experience, corporate venture capital, finance, or strategy consulting - able to turn PhD-level insights into a market-ready thesis.
- Networker who has handled partnerships or collaborations across academia, startups, corporates, and regulators.
- Operator’s Mindset - comfortable rolling up sleeves, owning deliverables end-to-end, and thriving in a small, mission-driven team.
- Location in Alberta with about 20 % travel across Western Canada and to our Toronto HQ.
