Boomerang Ventures combines a venture studio and venture fund to provide capital and hands-on expertise to very early-stage life science start-ups to build them more quickly and effectively toward a fast, lucrative exit. First time founders needing business, technical and other expertise to form and build a new company (NewCo) are a good fit for the Studio.
The Boomerang Studio purpose and passion is to transform lives and we do this in our niche of bringing amazing connected healthcare ideas to life. We are seeking a highly skilled and versatile Controller & HR Lead to join our dynamic team at our Venture Studio. This role is pivotal in ensuring accurate financial management, providing robust financial models for the Studio and Portfolio Companies, and overseeing human resource operations of the Studio. The Controller & HR Lead will determine their work schedule with the studio director, but a minimum commitment of 20 – 30 hours per week is required.
Role and Responsibilities
1. Financial Management:
- Reports to the Boomerang Studio Director.
- Manage and supervise all accounting functions, including accounts payable/receivable, general ledger entries, and financial reporting.
- Develop and maintain financial policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
- Work with Boomerang Studio as well as all portfolio companies to maintain consistency
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports for stakeholders, offering insightful analysis and recommendations.
- Communicate financial insights and HR updates effectively to the leadership team and stakeholders.
2. Financial Modeling:
- Create and maintain comprehensive financial models to forecast and analyze the Studio's financial performance, aiding strategic decision-making.
- Conduct scenario analysis and sensitivity testing to assess potential risks and opportunities for the Studio's projects and investments.
3. Human Resource Leadership:
- Oversee HR operations, including interface with recruitment partners, onboarding, performance management, and employee relations.
- Implementation of HR policies and procedures, ensuring alignment with legal and organizational requirements through the Studio’s PEO.
- Provide guidance and support to management and employees on HR-related matters.
- Work with PEO to confirm and approve payroll processing.

Target Profile
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (Master's degree preferred).
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation highly desirable.
- Proven experience (5-7 years) in accounting and financial management, preferably within a startup or venture environment.
- Proficiency in financial modeling, expense reimbursement and analysis tools (e.g., Excel, QuickBooks, Ramp, etc.).
- Strong understanding of HR principles and practices.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to multitask, prioritize, and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
- Prefer a candidate with an understanding of life sciences including end markets, regulatory issues, companies, and institutes.
- Understands fundraising needs and helps develop compelling investor stories.
- Easily develops networking connections in the with investors, founders, suppliers, resources, and entrepreneurial ecosystem stakeholders.
- Analytical; gathers and synthesizes data to build compelling business cases.
- Excellent communication skills; willing and able to raise tough topics in an open and respectful way.
- Excellent business execution, project management and work prioritization skills.
Expected Results and Metrics of Success
- Excellent contributor to the creation of 4 NewCos launched by the studio per year.
- Early rejection of ideas and concepts incompatible with Studio strategy.
- Improves business processes and execution of each stage.
- Attracts new talent to the studio and Newco’s.
Commitment Expected
- Minimum of 20-30 hours per week and located at HqO or remotely in a professional atmosphere.
- Travel and after-hours work as needed to build and maintain business and community relationships.
Location Expectations
This role is highly preferred to be based out of Indianapolis, IN with the ability to collaborate in person at our office. At this time we may consider individuals outside of Indianapolis if they reside within IN, MI, and/or OH at time of employment.
