Job Description

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Head of Portfolio Management will lead a passionate and knowledgeable team responsible for;

  • Sector-based knowledge - providing technical expertise and sector-based knowledge and input on all Investments;
  • Portfolio construction – develop, implement and maintain a Breakthrough Victoria relevant portfolio construction framework and function; and
  • Asset management- actively manage Breakthrough Victoria’s interests in companies and/or assets post transaction in line with strategic direction and company growth plans.

The successful candidate will be able to utilise their strong investing knowledge and experience along with proven leadership skills to develop the team and further the Portfolio Construction, Asset Management and Research activities of Breakthrough Victoria. As a key member of the Executive Leadership team, the successful candidate will have proven leadership and strategy capabilities to lead Breakthrough Victoria and drive successful outcomes.

Key Accountabilities

  • Build Recognised Sector Expertise: Develop Breakthrough Victoria’s reputation as an investment sector expert, including the central role of impact, in the identified key strategic sectors through sound investment decision making, primary research and leading opinion pieces and outreach including: supporting investment origination by identifying sector-based investment opportunities through relevant research, academic or industry contacts and via connectivity of opportunities through asset management.
  • Post Investment Asset Management: Develop and implement asset management policies and processes to maximise the strategic objectives of Breakthrough Victoria’s investment targets. This includes oversight of all Breakthrough Victoria investments post-transaction and active engagement with invested companies and/or partners to ensure the delivery of agreed business and growth plans through each stage of Breakthrough Victoria funding program until divestment or exit.
  • Portfolio Construction: Develop and implement a Breakthrough Victoria relevant portfolio construction approach and function noting Breakthrough Victoria’s status as an impact investor seeking appropriate sustainable risk adjusted returns.
  • Transaction Phase: Coordinate relevant sector-based specialists to participate in and support the relevant Breakthrough Victoria investment team(s) during the transaction phase through to investment.
  • Leadership Team: As a key member of the Breakthrough Victoria Executive Leadership Team, work closely and cooperatively with the Chief Executive Officer and other team members to ensure the successful delivery of the Breakthrough Victoria investment and corporate plans.

Key Selection Criteria - Knowledge, experience and critical skills required

  • Leadership and Strategy: Proven ability to lead and inspire a team of professionals to deliver on that part of the Breakthrough Victoria investment plan pertaining to supporting the development of impact, emerging technologies and breakthrough ideas.
  • Strategic Financial Acumen: Proven deep experience and ability to lead and develop a financial services function consistent with Breakthrough Victoria’s objectives.
  • Technical Knowledge: High-level technical knowledge and awareness in Breakthrough Victoria’s five specialist investment areas (Health & Life Sciences, Agri-food, Advanced Manufacturing, Clean Economy and Digital Technology).
  • Asset Management: Demonstrated experience in investee company asset management recognising Breakthrough Victoria’s work with founders, innovators and/ or companies to successfully deliver on their respective development plans, growth strategies and/or business cases.
  • Portfolio Construction: Experience and capability in developing and implementing a unique portfolio construction strategy.
  • Professional Networks: Strong and established networks with the key players that will support Breakthrough Victoria’s objectives.
  • Management and Integrity: As a member of the Breakthrough Victoria Executive Leadership Team, possess highly developed management skills and a commitment to acting with integrity.
  • Communication: Outstanding influencing, communication, negotiation, conflict resolution and interpersonal skills.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree or higher in commerce, economics, business or other relevant discipline.
