The Associate role

This is an opportunity to join a high-performing, growing investment team. You will be working on investing in some of the most talented entrepreneurs and exciting tech companies in the UK, as well as helping support those companies post-investment.

The key responsibilities of the Associate role include:

• Identifying the most promising emerging startups in the spaces we focus on, building relationships with entrepreneurs and others in the ecosystem, and bringing new investment opportunities through.
• Supporting investment processes and due diligence, working closely with deal leads in our team.
• Leading pieces of research to deliver insight on technologies, markets and trends, and working on ad-hoc projects for portfolio companies.
• Building a network within the early-stage tech community, and leveraging that network for insight, dealflow and to support the entrepreneurs we work with.

We offer on-the-job experience at the heart of the startup ecosystem, supported by more structured learning. We play venture in multiplayer, with a collaborative approach driven by research and data.

You will be able to progress to Investment Manager or another role within our firm (or one of our portfolio companies).

Requirements

We expect to interview a diverse range of candidates and will be looking for a mix of the following character traits and skills:

• Three-plus years of relevant commercial experience - this might include from VC or PE, founder/product/commercial/ops roles in a startup or tech business, strategy consulting, M&A, corp dev, an accelerator or similar.
• An ability to critically assess digital products and technical concepts. We’re especially interested in candidates who have proven this with a technical background, whether academically (physics, biology, biochemistry, engineering, compsci etc.) or in previous roles in a technology context. Bonus points if you can sling code or data.
• High level of intellectual curiosity, together with the hustle to find the answers you need. You're a sponge for information, spot things others don't see and dig deeper to create genuine insight beyond the surface-level. You're able to cut through complexity to form a view quickly.
• Comfortable with uncertainty. There's no single right answer in venture, and sometimes it's not obvious what the right question is - a lot of people find this tough. You thrive in this environment.
• Self-starter and independent, with a proactive mindset. You come up with new ideas, run experiments and get others in the team excited about what you find. You can juggle a lot of balls at once when you need to.
• Comfortable in a data-driven environment with a ton of SaaS tools. You probably spot new tools before everyone else, and have ideas about how we should improve our stack over time. You can slice and dice data (whether in spreadsheets or other tools) to get the outputs you need.
• A demonstrable passion for technology, start-ups and entrepreneurship. That's easy to say - but you can talk about something you've actually done with this passion, whatever it is.
• A track record of getting things done as part of a collaborative team, able to get on with things independently but partnering well in person and online. You have a high degree of openness and self-awareness.
• Bonus marks if you write or present well! We turn our research into insight, and publish some of this to share it with the world, whether as blogs, reports, podcasts or events.
