Job Description

We’re seeking an Investment Manager to join our team to lead our efforts to attract the most promising early-stage companies in Australia. This is a rare opportunity to join a rapidly growing venture capital firm and help build the system that will allow us to invest in over 100 companies per year. The successful candidate will have exposure to an extraordinary variety of founders and work closely with the most promising, those which join our portfolio.

Reporting to the COO, this role primarily involves leading, and building a scalable system, to recruit portfolio companies and manage their progress from initial discovery through to the investment process. You will be the first point of contact for founders engaging with Skalata and will establish strong and trusted relationships with founders, referral partners (e.g. accelerators, universities, startup lawyers and accountants), investors (e.g. Skalata LPs, later stage VC funds, family offices), and business leaders across the country.

You will have experience as a founder or operator of an early-stage company (seed through to Series B+ and/or exit) and will understand the challenges and opportunities facing early-stage founders. You will understand key functions including customer discovery & success, product, sales & marketing, and technology which will enable you to have informed discussions with prospective investee companies.

In addition to the above, you will have the opportunity to work with our portfolio companies to expand your knowledge, network, and reputation in venture capital.

What you’ll do

· Lead the processes of recruitment and selection of portfolio companies at Skalata Ventures

· Build the systems required to scale to 100 companies per year.

· Implement and manage the tooling stack required to efficiently execute the recruitment and selection processes, and capture the information required to make data driven decisions.

· Lead and participate in the review of investment opportunities, selection interviews and due diligence activities.

· Develop, build and nurture trusting relationships with founders and referral partners (including other venture capital firms, university partners, angel investors and other friends of Skalata) across the country.

What you’ll need

· You have demonstrated experience as a founder or operator in an early-stage high-growth company and in business areas including product management, customer discovery & success, marketing, and sales.

· An understanding of the common challenges facing early-stage companies including product market fit, developing a growth engine and sustainable business model.

· You demonstrate initiative, the ability to work autonomously, the capability to prioritize tasks and at the same time support your peers and are a great team player.

· Experience in implementing and using a tooling stack including customer relationship management (CRM) software (e.g. HubSpot), workflow tools (e.g. Zapier) and more.

· You are authentic, hungry, and down-to-earth and have excellent communication skills, written and verbal.

· You are empathetic and helpful, with a high level of emotional intelligence when interacting with others.

· You enjoy problem solving and can convey complex concepts and ideas in simple terms

Additional Information

This role is well-suited to a former founder / operator who is keen to gain experience in venture capital and expand their knowledge of how to identify and invest in high potential companies.

This is a full-time ongoing role. The remuneration for this role is $150k p.a. (including superannuation) + LTI (ESOP and/or carry).
