Job Description
Portfolio Development is focused on several areas: Strategy, Partnership/Business Development, Portfolio Company Development and continuing to build out the MRV platform with key industry relationships and other value-adds. The Portfolio Development Manager will report to the VP of Strategic Partnerships. The following will be required:
- Serve as the Portfolio Development support for the Equipment Technologies sector
- Develop strategic theses at the portfolio and individual investment level
- Collaborate with portfolio companies to understand and translate their business and product strategy into successful partnerships with Munich Re and Munich Re’s clients
- Facilitate (and provide further support as needed) partnership structuring and negotiation between startups and Munich Re business units
- Work with Munich Re business units and portfolio companies to develop business and project plans. Monitor execution and support conflict resolution efforts
- Collaborate with other Portfolio Development and Investment Team members to build out new value-add capabilities for MRV’s portfolio companies
- Develop and maintain a strong network in areas relevant to the Equipment Technologies sector
- Direct junior team members on projects when appropriate
The Person: Successful Candidate
The successful candidate will need to have the relevant foundation and industry experience to develop their own process, drive their own work and lead others without step-by-step instructions. Additional desirable skills include the following:
- Sector experience and background in OEMs, IOT, Cyber, Insurtech would be ideal but either Insurance and/or OEM plus IOT experience is desirable
- Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills. This individual is responsible for driving strategic engagement between our business units and portfolio companies. Executive presence is key for engagement with founders and senior business unit leaders
- Ability to handle a fast-paced, high-engagement environment
- Entrepreneurial mindset to drive the development of new ideas and independently solve issues as they arise
- Exposure to strategic partnering (e.g., business development, corporate development) and negotiations in an InsurTech context
- Knowledge of partnering types and structures
- Experience working with venture-backed technology companies
- Experience in business development in a leadership capacity
- Existing network of OEM, IOT and/or Insurance ecosystem contacts, including startups and large corporations
- Ability to perform partner assessments in early-stage companies or areas where there is unclear or missing information
- Disciplined execution capability with demonstrated ability to develop workplans and facilitate execution across a small team
- Ability to be self-sufficient, reasoning out logical approaches to solve without step-by-step instructions
- Demonstrated track record in engaging with senior executives
Requirements and Qualifications:
- 3-5 years of experience
- 3+ years working in the OEM, Insurance P&C or Professional Services industries
- Superior oral and written communication skills
- Strong Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel skills
- Superior proactive networking and relationship development skills
- Proven teamwork skills, both as a leader and cross-functional team member
- Self-motivated with high initiative
- Willing to travel 25% of the time, including internationally
- In office requirement of 1-2 days per week
